Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne seemingly ended all hopes of a transfer to Manchester City last night by saying he would stay at the German club on national television at an awards ceremony.
However, the Belgian star reportedly was duped into saying he would stay after a presenter at the awards ceremony asked him to repeat the words: "I, Kevin De Bruyne, will definitely play this season at VfL Wolfsburg," leading to last night's speculation.
"I am furious by what has happened tonight," De Bruyne's agent Patrick De Koster told the "Mirror". "We are devastated. A practical joke in a live show, in a language the player doesn't completely understand? Unbelievable. Kevin wanted to show respect by attending this event."
De Koster continued by saying a transfer has not been ruled out, but Wolfsburg are currently refusing to negotiate with Manchester City after their latest bid of £47million. The German outfit are said to be holding out for at least £50million while City are offering the 24-year-old a six-year contract worth near £200,000-a-week.
"We have yet to find out if Wolfsburg has reached any agreement with a club. Kevin remains a Wolfsburg player and is focused on his job at the club. He also remains happy at Wolfsburg. No decision has been made on Kevin's future in this transfer window."
