The "Daily Mail" report Manchester United's record £750million adidas sponsorship could help fund a £200million move for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi in the summer. Reports in Spain suggest adidas could personally help fund the move with another contribution, but nonetheless the prospect remains doubtful.
In the summer, Manchester United will enter the first year of their 10-year, £750million equipment and apparel deal with adidas that will allow them to see an increase of £75million in the transfer market every season in addition to their revenue under the FIFA Financial Fair Play rules. The kit deal is unprecedented in global football as the next closest deal is that of Real Madrid at £31million per season with adidas.
Barcelona likely won’t part with their iconic superstar for less than £200million, but just last week Messi admitted he wasn’t sure where he would be at the start of next season. United manager Louis van Gaal just spent £156million during the past summer, including a British record £59.7million for winger Angel Di Maria, to bring in Radamel Falcao (on loan), Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo.
Still, it seems unlikely the 27-year-old Argentine will leave Barcelona in the prime of his career, although the Catalan side aren’t the giants they used to be. Messi threw the footballing world for a loop last week when he followed Chelsea on Instagram as Cesc Fabregas has reportedly tried to recruit his old friend.
